This presentation will summarize the current impacts and future projections of biobased plastics in the emerging global bioeconomy. Kate Lewis, of USDA’s BioPreferred Program, will outline the use of the ASTM D-6866-16 test method to determine the biobased carbon (biocarbon) content of certified biobased products approved and labeled by USDA, and how the recently revised test method (updated in summer 2016) differs from previous versions. Kate will also provide a summary-level update about the program’s nearly 3,000 USDA Certified Biobased Products, focusing on certified bioplastic polymers and biobased plastics and packaging. Case studies documenting an increase in the purchase and use of biobased products in the Federal Government, commercial/B-to-B, and consumer markets will be featured.
